Meet Isabella (Izzy)
Izzy was born three months premature, weighing just one pound six ounces when she came into the world. Having only been carried by her mother for 24 weeks, she was born on what’s known as the limit of viability - the earliest point at which an infant has a 50% chance of long-term survival. Even with intensive neonatal care, she was still at high risk for many major disabilities.
Luckily, Izzy was born at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Their neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) maintains the highest rating possible for a facility of its kind. Their staff are highly trained and their equipment is state-of-the-art. Of the half a million babies born prematurely every year, she had among the best chances of a healthy life.
But even the best equipment and staff can’t make it easy seeing your newborn inside of an incubator. That’s where the guidance and support provided by the March of Dimes becomes so crucial. From helping them recognize the risks and prepare for premature birth to group counseling and hospital-to-home assistance, the March of Dimes was there to guide Izzy’s family and hundreds of thousands more like them every year.
Since Izzy’s birth, her parents have helped raise money every year to support the charity that helped save their family. They’ll be walking in Cincinnati’s March for Babies, and this year Izzy will be walking with them. The walk is this weekend and their team is still short of their goal, so I’ve decided to harness the power of Tumblr for a good cause.
Please, if you can, give a few dollars to help make stories like Izzy’s have the happy ending they deserve.
